KENNEDY YANKO
Tilted Lift  (2022)
Steel,  Spun Glass Paint Skin, 96" x 72" x 60"

The work has a verticality that takes eyes up and up, skyward. The spiraling paint skin, hefty and full, wraps around the sturdy metal, hugging its foundation.

In the materials’ relationship, there’s stability, dependency and reciprocity. These are all traits of a sound, strong, warm family; traits of Yanko’s maternal side of the family.

This commission, a work for Richelieu Dennis recognizes and reflects familial and filial piety — devotion to creating solid ground for children, friends and others to spring from. With all its weight and stature, and helix-like curves, Tilted Lift embodies the work required to cultivate the space and possibility for growth, play, love and togetherness. It is a gust of care.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Kennedy Yanko (b. 1988, St. Louis, MO) is a sculptor and installation artist working in found metal and paint skin. Yanko deploys her materials in ways that explore the limitations of optic vision, underlining the opportunities we miss when looking with eyes alone. Her methods reflect a dual abstract expressionist surrealist approach that centers the seen and unseen factors that affect, contribute to, and moderate human experience.
